New client: T L Huchu

We are very excited to announce Ampersand’s latest client: T L Huchu.

Originally from Zimbabwe and a long-term resident of Edinburgh, he is the award-winning author of two previous novels for adults: The Hairdresser of Harare and The Maestro, The Magistrate and the Mathematician (both written as Tendai Huchu). These were published worldwide and translated into multiple languages. He has also written extensively in the short form, with stories appearing in the Manchester Review, Interzone, AfroSF, Ellery Queen and others.

Tendai’s new book is Ghostalker; the first part of an original and gripping fantasy series for a YA and crossover audience. Set in a post-calamity Edinburgh where magic is commoditised and traded, the class system has become still more prevalent, giving a truly dystopian backdrop for this story:

As if she didn’t have enough problems paying rent on the caravan, looking after her blind Gran and moody little sister and running errands for the dead, Ropa Moyo discovers that someone is sucking the essence out of local children, leaving them prematurely aged. Combining southern African magic with Scottish pragmatism, Ropa goes about finding the source of this evil, and dealing with it for good…

Tendai said:

“I’m excited to be joining the Ampersand family. I really look forward to working with Jamie who has an eclectic taste in fiction, which really helps because I enjoy working in different genres. He gets my project, and his editorial input and passion for the manuscript are crucial for its success. I know I’m supposed to put on the persona of the tortured artist, but Ghostalker is a really fun project and I can’t wait to complete books one and two over the next year or so.”

Ghostalker will be ready for submission soon. Enquiries should be directed to Jamie Cowen at [email protected].
